Celebrity Bowling

Remember the popular syndicated sports series Celebrity Bowling hosted by Jed Allan?  Well get ready for the new and improved version coming Spring 2011.  Producer Don Gregory will be taping Stars and Strikes at the Lucky Strike bowling center inside L.A. Live.

Celebrity Bowling ran from January 16, 1971 to September 1978.  The series was produced in Los Angeles at the studios of KTTV.

Each week, the show featured four celebrities on a pair of AMF or Brunswick lanes installed inside the KTTV's studios.  Each team consisted of two celebrities in a "best ball" competition.  One celeb from each of the two teams threw their first ball in the specially constructed two-lane alley. Of the two bowlers, the one who knocked over more pins in their first shot had their partner try to make the easier of the two spares -- so a 1-2-4 spare would be easier than a 5-10, even though it would be more pins. Ten frames were played in this manner (assumedly with the celebrities alternating in the first and second positions), with prizes awarded to members of the studio audience based on their performance. A score of 210 won the audience member a new car; apparently this was only accomplished by Mod Squad cast members Tige Andrews and Michael Cole.

In 1987, 26 episodes of The New Celebrity Bowling were produced for national syndication.  Jed Allan hosted again.

In 2008, TVS Television Network began producing Celebrity Bowling for TV syndication, using the AMF Lanes at the Silver Nugget  Casino in North Las Vegas, Nevada.  Host of the new version is veteran Las Vegas TV sports anchor Ron Futrell.

We are looking forward to the new version coming this spring.  The format will be the same as the original.

The Golden Age of Bowling!

The period from 1940 to 1960 is known as the golden age of bowling due to the sport's great popularity increase and advances in its play.  Bowling was a billion-dollar industry in the United States by 1945.

In 1951, American Machine and Foundry Company (AMF, then a maker of machinery for the bakery, tobacco and apparel businesses) purchased the patents to Gottfried Schmidt's automatic pinspotter, and by late 1952, production model pinspotters were introduced. No longer did a bowling center have to rely on "pinboys."

Television embraced bowling in the 1950's, and the game's popularity grew!  NBC's broadcast of "championship Bowling" was the first network coverage of bowling.  ABC became the first network to telecast competition of the Pro Bowlers Association (PBA) in 1961.  Eddie Elias founded the PBA, and with his leadership, the Pro Bowlers Tour became a hugely popular stalwart of ABC sports broadcasting.

Bowling Fun Facts ... (1-10)

Here at Westbrook, we are a fun, family oriented bowling center.  We like to make your experience unforgettable!

So here are some interesting facts about bowling that you may or may not have known!

Fact #1:  A bowling lane is 60 feet long from the foul line to the headpin.  (Which is coincidentally the same distance from the pitcher's mound to home plate in baseball!)

Fact #2:  The first 300 game in a televised PBA event was rolled by Jack Biondolillo in the Tournament of Champions.

Fact #3:  PBA stands for Professional Bowlers Association, which was established in 1958.

Fact #4:  Bowling balls were made out of wood until the early 1900s.

Fact #5:  The largest bowling center is located in Japan and has 141 lanes.

Fact #6:  The first indoor bowling lanes were built in New York City in 1840.

Fact #7:  A bowling ball weighs between 6 to 16 pounds.

Fact #8:  The United States Bowling Congress has more than 2.5 million members.

Fact #9:  Bowling is the number one participation sport in America.

Fact #10:  The origins of bowling can be traced about 4,000 years back to Rome and Greece.

Types of Bowling

On September 9th, 1895, the first standardized rules for bowling were established in New York City.  Most people are only familiar with only a few types of bowling, but there are actually many different games that involve knocking down pins with a ball.

Ten-pin bowling is the most popular form of the game played in the United States.  The ten pins are each 15 inches high and approximately 4.7 inches in diameter at their widest point.  These pins are set up in a triangular formation at the end of a long, flat surface called a lane, with the headpin set up at a distance of 60 feet from the foul line.  Each pin is set up 12 inches (30 cm) apart, measured from center to center.  Each game of ten-pin bowling is divided into ten rounds (called "frames").  A player uses a bowling ball to knock down the pins.  The ball ball cannot weigh more than 16 pounds and the circumference of the ball must not be more than 2.25 feet.  A player is given two opportunities to knock down the pins in every frame.  A "strike" is bowled when the bowler knocks down all ten pins after throwing the first ball and the frame is over.   When pins are left standing, the others are swept away and the bowler throws the ball again.  If all the remaining pins are knocked down after the second ball is thrown, then it is called a "spare."  In general, one point is scored for each pin that is knocked over.  When all pins are knocked down in a single frame, then bonus pins are awarded.

Duckpin bowling is a style that is popular along the east coast of the United States.  Almost every rule is the same as in ten-pin except for the size of the pins and ball.  The balls used in duckpin bowling are much smaller than those used in ten-pin bowling, weighing 2-4 pounds each and having a maximum diameter of 5 inches, and does not have finger holes.  The pins are shorter and lighter than their ten-pin equivalents, standing only 9 13/32 inches tall.  There are still ten frames in each game.  In duckpin, bowlers have three balls per frame instead of two in ten-pin bowling.  The maximum possible score is 300 points just as in ten-pin, however, it has never been accomplished in duckpin bowling.

In 1909 a Canadian version was invented called five-pin bowling.  It was designed to quicken the pace of the game to fit it into a typical lunch break.  Similarly to duckpin, the balls are small enough to fit in the palm of your hand.  The pins are set up in a "V" formation that points back at the player, and each has a value from two to five points, depending on the position.  All pins have a  heavy rubber band around the middle to make them move farther.  Each player has three chances to knock the pins down, just as in duckpin.

Candlepin bowling is another type of bowling played mostly in New England and parts of northeast Canada that was developed in 1880 in Massachusetts by a local bowling center owner, Justin White before the standardization of ten-pin bowling in 1895 and the invention of duckpin bowling.  Just as in duckpin and five-pin bowling, each player has up to three balls per frame and the balls are smaller to fit into your hand with no finger holes.  In candlepin bowling, the pins are 15 3/4-inches high, have identical ends and are almost 3 inches in diameter at the center.  The pins are set up 12-inches apart and in the same triangular format as in ten-pin and duckpin bowling.  Unlike in ten-pin, duckpin and five-pin bowling, pins are not cleared between balls during a players turn.

There are also multiple forms of outdoor bowling.  In these outdoor variations, the players throw a ball in an attempt to put it closest to a designated point or slot in the bowling arena.

Here at Westbrook Lanes, we offer ten-pin bowling to our players.  No matter what type of bowling you decide to try, make sure to have a good time!  Although there are many major bowling tournaments, bowling is a fun family sport.  You might have a favorite version of bowling, but it is always nice to try different adaptations to add some excitement to the game.

Burn Calories and Lose Weight While Bowling!!

Believe it or not, bowling is a very healthy form of exercise.  Bowling is an anaerobic type of physical exercise.  Meaning that it is an exercise that builds muscle through tension, similar to walking with free weights.  Anaerobic exercise is used by athletes in non-endurance sports to promote strength, speed and power and by body builders to build muscle mass.

Bowling helps to burn fat and calories!  As you flex your muscles with every twisting, turning and swinging motion that you perform while bowling you can actually find yourself burning a little bit of body fat that you have accumulated over the years.  Depending on how much you weigh and how much effort you use, a game of bowling can burn anywhere from 170 to 300 calories!  Many people have taken up walking as their form of exercise to try and lose weight.  It is effective, but have a little fun with it!  Put a bowling ball in your hand and walk down that lane towards your next strike!  The walking you do in a three game series of bowling is equal to one mile of walking.  When you are swinging your arm to throw the bowling ball, the stretching and flexing that occurs provides enough exercise for the tendons, ligaments, muscles and joints in your arm.

One of the best health benefits of bowling is that you get to develop a lot of new relationships while strengthening your existing ones!  Bowling with friends and family is fun and exciting, but you can also make lots of other connections when you join a league.  Many psychologists recommend building more friendships with different people because it has been shown to improve your heart muscles an increase longevity.  If you are suffering from emotional stress then you can severely shorten your lifespan and cause harm to your body.  To prevent this, you should build your emotional relationships and enjoy yourself a lot more!

Like any other sport or physical activity, you should warm up before bowling to prevent injuries.  When picking up bowling balls, use two hands to prevent back, wrist or hand injuries.  Since bowling balls are heavy with varying weights, it is recommended to bend one's knee while picking them up.  Bowlers should also warm up their fingers before inserting them into a bowling ball to prevent their fingers from getting stuck in the ball.  Check the soles of your bowling shoes for wet or sticky objects to prevent falling.  Also, do not cross the foul line onto the bowling lane!  There is oil on the lanes to allow bowling balls to glide smoothly and a bowler can get seriously injured if they were to slip and fall on it.

Bowling is a sport that is not too hard on your muscles but doesn't let you rest for too long either.  You need to bowl regularly for it to be a positive health benefit to you.  Joining a league is the best way to make sure you are at least bowling weekly.  Then, come once or twice a week during one of our many nightly specials to get in some practice and keep your average going up!  Now, if every time you come to bowl you drink a six pack of beer, eat nachos and a hot dog, you will cancel this great healthy benefit out!  But done right, a regular bowling regiment can contribute to an overall healthy lifestyle and be a lot of fun too!!

Have fun, be safe and enjoy the health benefits of a great sport!
