Burn Calories and Lose Weight While Bowling!!

Believe it or not, bowling is a very healthy form of exercise.  Bowling is an anaerobic type of physical exercise.  Meaning that it is an exercise that builds muscle through tension, similar to walking with free weights.  Anaerobic exercise is used by athletes in non-endurance sports to promote strength, speed and power and by body builders to build muscle mass.

Bowling helps to burn fat and calories!  As you flex your muscles with every twisting, turning and swinging motion that you perform while bowling you can actually find yourself burning a little bit of body fat that you have accumulated over the years.  Depending on how much you weigh and how much effort you use, a game of bowling can burn anywhere from 170 to 300 calories!  Many people have taken up walking as their form of exercise to try and lose weight.  It is effective, but have a little fun with it!  Put a bowling ball in your hand and walk down that lane towards your next strike!  The walking you do in a three game series of bowling is equal to one mile of walking.  When you are swinging your arm to throw the bowling ball, the stretching and flexing that occurs provides enough exercise for the tendons, ligaments, muscles and joints in your arm.

One of the best health benefits of bowling is that you get to develop a lot of new relationships while strengthening your existing ones!  Bowling with friends and family is fun and exciting, but you can also make lots of other connections when you join a league.  Many psychologists recommend building more friendships with different people because it has been shown to improve your heart muscles an increase longevity.  If you are suffering from emotional stress then you can severely shorten your lifespan and cause harm to your body.  To prevent this, you should build your emotional relationships and enjoy yourself a lot more!

Like any other sport or physical activity, you should warm up before bowling to prevent injuries.  When picking up bowling balls, use two hands to prevent back, wrist or hand injuries.  Since bowling balls are heavy with varying weights, it is recommended to bend one's knee while picking them up.  Bowlers should also warm up their fingers before inserting them into a bowling ball to prevent their fingers from getting stuck in the ball.  Check the soles of your bowling shoes for wet or sticky objects to prevent falling.  Also, do not cross the foul line onto the bowling lane!  There is oil on the lanes to allow bowling balls to glide smoothly and a bowler can get seriously injured if they were to slip and fall on it.

Bowling is a sport that is not too hard on your muscles but doesn't let you rest for too long either.  You need to bowl regularly for it to be a positive health benefit to you.  Joining a league is the best way to make sure you are at least bowling weekly.  Then, come once or twice a week during one of our many nightly specials to get in some practice and keep your average going up!  Now, if every time you come to bowl you drink a six pack of beer, eat nachos and a hot dog, you will cancel this great healthy benefit out!  But done right, a regular bowling regiment can contribute to an overall healthy lifestyle and be a lot of fun too!!

Have fun, be safe and enjoy the health benefits of a great sport!
